Analog Synthesizer Builders’ Summit 2008 Report

We had the “Analog Synthesizer Builders’ Summit” this year also in Akihabara, Tokyo. About 30 people attended and exchanged a lot of hard-core technical information. Here are some pictures taken there…

Takeda-san showed number of electro-musical gadgets mainly playing with Gakken SX-150.  Starting from the bottle, from left to right, they are talking modulator, analog sequencer, pARM (is a small size mono synth), SX-150 MIDI controller, SX-150 MIDI controller II, (Korg tuner), (SX-150), analog sequencer, mini-tansu (is a small modular synth system).  Behind the keyboard is a ribbon controller for SX-150.

mu-Ray san’s mu-station TERMINI.   This is a PC but looks like a keyboard.  In other words, this is a keyboard but has a PC internally.  Intersting idea.  I think this is practically useful for music creation.  According-to mu-Ray san, the hardest part in building is frame assembly and painting.  It took him about 6 months for painting.  The frame is made of wood and is beautiful like an urushi craft.

Mr PCM1723 presenting his home-built FM-type MIDI sound module.  He brought several MIDI2CV modules as well.  He uses a lot of amazing ideas that are quite unique, for example, VCF based on switched capacitor technique.

Shocho showed his vintage equirement.  The most impressive is Linn Drum.  It sounded great.  He played his own song using the equipment.

Mr. analog has improved his TR-909 clone, that had greatly amazed us by its quality last year.  For this year, beyond the original feature, BD, SD, HH are able to be tuned via MIDI control.  Also, it has sync out for TB-303 etc, and using the sync feature, TB-303 now is able to “shuffle”.  Sounds even greater this year (amazing, amazing, and amazing).

This year, we had several SX-150 modifications.  Katzmi-san and masa-921 san brought a lot of modified models.  This one has modified panel.  You know what is the reference at brief glance ;-) EMS-like mod SX-150 (two SX’s are in it).  It even has the patch matrix!  Sounds very caotic :-) This is also SX-150.  The round device sparks something that drives SX-150 (mystery).  For me, as the designer of the SX-150 circuit, it’s more than pleasure to see my friends are enjoying with SX-150.  Thanks, thanks.

Shin-san’s Moog Modular clone has passed two years since the first modules are built.  It’s gaining the vintage taste.  He has founded his synthesizer manufacturing company this year.  This is the first product, “Legend”.

Uda-san and his “Udah”.  Udah is a synth controller that looks like U.F.O.  Udah is quite well known, but this is his first attending to the summit (thanks!).   The sound source has been a MIDI synthesizer,  and now he’s working on his own synthesizer.  For the meeting he brought a sine wave generator which sounds good (amazing it’s only sine wave!).

Nao-san brought his Pollard Syndrum clone.  The panel is beautiful.  The pads are his own builds, which are quite well made.  He also brought an analog sequencer.  Small boards on left hand are badge-style metronomes.

超小型の USB MIDI to CV です。

This is more-san’s Pepper-MIDI, a very small USB MIDI to CV converter.  It uses small number of parts.  Uses SX-150 as the synthesizer.  His motivation is persuade many people to start making.

There are several styles of synthesizer design.  One of them that is uniquely exists in Japan is “Yamashita-synth”.  It is designed  by Haruo Yamashita and published as articles in magazine “Shoho-no Radio” in 1970’s.  We had three Yamashita-synths.

The first one is from Abe-san.  In the picture he’s lecturing ring modulation using his Yamashita-synth.

The second one is from Tapioka-Nabe san.  This is a moduler system based on Yamashita-synth.  The size is reasonablly small that fit into a bookshelf.  It is very usable in Japanese limited living environment.  He also brought an analog sequencer (bottom right).  This is a year of analog sequencers.

The last Yamashita-synth but not least is from Chuck.  He build a suite-case type modular based on Yamashita-synth.  He also adds his original modules such as oscilloscope and Caos LFO, etc.  This one might be the most digitalized analog synth in the meeting.  The system includes more than 10 micro processors!

This is Mr. RJB’s corner.  This year he brought pARM type-R and CMU-800.  The type-R is based on takedasan’s design, and Mr. RJB made some modification.  The sound is characterized as Mr. RJB’s own synth, in spite of the circuit is mostly the same with the original.  It shows his great skill of synth making.  The CMU-800 is MIDI enabled.  The drum sound is cheap but attractive after a few decades has passed.

This is “Electric-Magnetic Drum Triggers” from myself.  It is a MIDI-enabled mechanical rhythm machine.

That’s it.  It was fun.
